A Massive Hemangioma of the Liver Treated by Right Hemihepatectomy

Abstract
The authors had an opportunity to treat a massive cavernous hemangioma arising from the right lobe of the liver by right hemihepatectomy. The patient was a 56 year old female who sought medical care for a slowly growing abdominal mass, associated with symptoms of indigestion and general weakness. She was anemic and a huge tumor was palpable on the right side of the abdomen, which was thought to be a retroperitoneal tumor. At laparotomy the tumor was found to be a big hemangioma arising from the right lobe of the liver.
Right hemihepatectomy was successfully carried out through the right thoracoabdominal incision. The post-operative course was complicated with transient hypoalbuminemia which responded to plasma administration.
The resected specimen measured 23 §¯¡¿30 §¯¡¿15 §¯ in size and weighed 3150 gm. Microscopically it was cavernomatous hemangioma of the liver. The technique of the right hemihepatectomy has been discussed briefly and refernces have been reviewed.
